BraunAbility Announces New Commitment to Hiring People With Disabilities

The company also opened its new accessible headquarters in Carmel, Ind. this month.

To honor National Disability Employment Awareness Month, wheelchair accessible vehicle provider BraunAbility will hire more people with disabilities and ensure its work environment is accessible.

After hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Carmel, Ind. headquarters, BraunAbility released a statement that it will ensure that each job opening at the company is sent directly to more than 20 disability referral sources throughout the Hoosier state.

“BraunAbility was founded by a person who used a wheelchair, and we have employed people with physical disabilities over the past five decades,” BraunAbility CEO Staci Kroon said in a statement. “This new effort will formalize our commitment to disability inclusion and help us continue living up to our aspiration of seeing the world through the eyes of our customers.”

Additionally, BraunAbility will continue its participation in Eskanazi Health’s summer internship program, which is designed specifically for college students with physical disabilities.

To accommodate employees needing an accessible work environment, BraunAbility’s new headquarters has doorways that are a minimum of 36 inches in width; conference rooms with automatic, powered sliding doors; height-adjustable desks and a private companion aid restroom available to all employees and visitors. BraunAbility is also touting its extra-wide pathways throughout the building to offer a large turning radius and 3D illusion access aisles in the parking lot to deter people from parking in handicap spots.

Microsoft and FCA US, which manufactures the Chrysler Pacifica minivan converted by BraunAbility, will join the company in installing 3D access aisles at their headquarters. This change comes as part of BraunAbility’s Drive for Inclusion campaign, which aims to advocate for mobility inclusion around the world.
