What are some of the latest compression offerings on the market.

From seniors to diabetic customers to those undergoing cancer treatment or wound care, compression products are essential. Compression can also be used by patients with various venous disorders, such as varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis and varicosities. However, despite the many uses and clear need for compression, few insurance providers fund compression items, and Medicare funding for compression is extremely limited. Because of the coverage gap, compression presents an important cash category for HME providers and pharmacies.

According to the research and consulting firm GlobalData, the compression market is expected to grow to $3.4 billion in 2019, up from $2.4 billion in 2014. GlobalData also finds that U.S. compression market will grow from $1 billion in 2012 to $1.6 billion in 2019. HME is positioned to be a key part of this market growth. Many of the people who already frequent HME stores and pharmacies for other HME equipment, such as diabetic customers and seniors, are a ready-made group of compression customers that providers can tap into. And since compression transactions will be conducted mostly on a retail basis, providers and pharmacies have the opportunity to increase their revenue.

By offering compression products, providers and pharmacies are able to provide higher-quality, custom-fit and style-forward products that better suit individual customers, but to take full advantage of this opportunity, providers should be strategic about their merchandise.
