Report: Medicare Overpaid for PMD Repairs

Based on a sampling of claims, an HHS OIG report estimates that Medicare improperly paid for $8 million in power mobility device repairs.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) published a report claiming Medicare overpaid $8 million in power mobility device (PMD) repairs.

A statement from the American Association for Homecare noted that OIG reports are influential in the policy process, and stated that the association has established a workgroup to review and respond to the report.

In the report, “Medicare Improperly Paid Durable Medical Equipment Suppliers an Estimated $8 Million of the $40 Million Paid for Power Mobility Device Repairs,” OIG says of 922 PMD repairs sampled from October 2018 through September 2019, only 637 met Medicare requirements and were properly paid. OIG estimated the remaining 217repairs represented $8 million in improper payments.

AAHomecare has provided a summary of OIG’s report that is available as a PDF.
