CMS Removing CMN, DIF Requirements
CMS will discontinue the need for certificates of medical necessity and DME information forms, starting with claims with a date of service on or after Jan. 1, 2023.
CMS announced in MLN Connects that it is discontinuing the need for certificates of medical necessity (CMNs) and DME information forms (DIFs), starting with claims with a date of service on or after Jan. 1, 2023.
The announcement simply stated that CMSs and DIFs will be discontinued on that date.
“As a result, you can’t submit CMN and DIF forms or their electronic claim data elements with claims for dates of service on or after Jan. 1, 2023,” the announcement read. “Suppliers must continue to submit CMN and DIF information for claims with dates of service before Jan. 1, 2023.”
CMS added that it will provide additional information soon.
In the meantime, Ronda Buhrmester, senior director of Payer Relations for VGM & Associates, noted in a video update on the VGM site that providers still have some options.
“However, we still have the PHE waivers,” she said. “So you can still keep that in mind as far as if you have a doctor that you are struggling with getting the CMN for oxygen completed, but you have everything else met. Then don’t hesitate to append the CR Modifier.”
Buhrmester reminded that the public health emergency waivers still stand until July 16 at which point HHS will consider an additional renewal of the PHE. The most recent renewal became effective on April 16.
